Breaking Barriers – How ‘Made in Rwanda’ Just Got a Major Passport to Africa

The dream of a unified African market has often felt like a distant goal, hindered by a maze of different standards, certifications, and border delays. Micro Small or medium enterprises (MSMEs) often endure jumping through the same hoops twice—testing the product at home, and then testing it all over again abroad.

A New Chapter for 32 Rwandan Trailblazers

In a landmark move for regional trade, 32 Rwandan SMEs have officially been awarded ARSO quality mark. These certifications cover 72 diverse products, ranging from high-quality agricultural goods to processed foods and value-added manufactured items.

But this isn’t just about a new sticker on a package. It is about trust.

By receiving these certificates, these local industries have proven that “Made in Rwanda” is synonymous with international excellence. They aren’t just local players anymore; they are now officially “Africa-ready.”

The Power of the “Handshake”: Mutual Recognition Agreements

Perhaps the most significant part of this update isn’t the certificates themselves, but the agreements signed behind the scenes.

The Rwanda Standards Board (RSB) has signed landmark Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs) with two major regional partners:

  1. The Standards Association of Zimbabwe
  2. Agence Congolaise de Normalisation et de la Qualité (ACONOQ) in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In the past, exporting meant delays, extra costs, and the frustration of re-certification. These MRAs act as a “Trade Passport.” Now, when a certified Rwandan SME sends its goods to Zimbabwe or the DRC, those countries recognize the RSB’s stamp of approval as their own. No more redundant testing. No more unnecessary waiting.

This milestone is a practical victory for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). It moves the conversation from abstract policy to real-world profits for small business owners.

When we empower SMEs—the backbone of the African economy—with the tools to trade across borders seamlessly, we aren’t just helping 32 companies; we are fueling industrialization and economic independence for the entire continent.

These 72 products carry with them the hard work of Rwandan entrepreneurs and the promise of a more integrated, prosperous Africa.
